MADE IN TAIWAN

The country of Taiwan is like a mixed salad: no one can exactly agree on what is in it, but everyone knows what it is when they see it. Taiwan is no different than most European countries: an age-old blend of cultures and influences that has melded into something unique over time – an identity.

Taiwanese live in a hard-fought democracy. They built their own nation on this resilient little mountainous rock in the ocean. They have no ambition to rule over others: they seek partnerships, not conquest. They are still figuring out how to juggle it all: democracy, environment, economy. It gets messy sometimes, but they are getting somewhere.

My point: it is time for the new generation to proudly embrace this diverse, messy, sometimes opaque identity as their own. Americans did it – so can the Taiwanese.

Taiwanese design is a thing. Taiwanese rock music is a thing. Taiwanese food is a thing.  Made in Taiwan means something again.
