Clippy is back… and gone again?

If you are old enough, you will remember Clippy, Microsoft Office's annoying animated paperclip that would jump uninvited onto your screen and offer help: "It looks like you are writing a ransom note. Can I help you with that?"

Clippy was never helpful. It just steered you towards a set of lame templates. What was so irritating about it was its blatant confidence: "I can help". No, you can't.

Is AI the new "Clippy"? More and more people are reporting "sloppy" mistakes, as if the original AI resources are being spread too thin across too many users who are all making increasingly difficult demands. Like Clippy, my ChatGTP is confidently making bigger and bigger mistakes and omissions. The one thing that has improved dramatically are its apologies, which are more eloquence than ever. It almost makes me feel it is all my fault.
